Gem Journal: Larvikite

What is it?  This is beautiful larvikite.  Larvikite is a relatively new stone for me, but I’m starting to think that it’s kind of special.  It is also known as pub stone or black labradorite.

Larvikite

What do I look for?  Characteristically, larvikite has a silvery-gray background and black flecks throughout.  It displays iridescence or chatoyance seen as flashes of blue light. This is similar to the labradorescence seen in labradorite. But, while labradorite is a translucent stone, larvikite appears opaque.

Do you have larvikite in the shop?  Let’s check and see.
